Just over a century ago the very first pair of cherry blossom trees were planted near this spot on the tidal basin. This stone lantern (carved over 400 years ago to honor the 3rd Shogun of the Tokugawa and gifted to the US in 1954) is lit every year to celebrate the Cherry Blossom Festival. (This year’s lighting will be on April 7th)
